A #WineWednesday choice from Chile, where it’s summer right now: Santa Rita Medalla Real Carmenère Gran Reserva 2011.  This wine is as warm as the weather in the Southern Hemisphere, and it will make the winter chill seem just a little less awful.

Carmenère has become a bit of a signature wine for Chile, and it’s easy to see why.  On the nose, there are aromas of smoke, leather, black plum, tea, fig, and tobacco.  That’s a lot of stuff going on, so it bodes well for the taste.  The wine is full bodied with mature tannins, and has flavours of tobacco, cedar, plum, fig, cured meat, and leather.

Pair this with BLTs, spaghetti with meatballs, or pot roast with mashed potatoes.

Happy sipping.
